View Article  UN Springs Into Action, Syria Shocked
Little Green Footballs

Syria fought pretty determinedly to get this stopped; it must have been something of a shock to the chinless one and his Iranian string-pullers that the UN decided to do something more than send another strongly-worded diplomatic communiqué. And today the Baathists of Syria and the Islamofascists of Hizballah got together and issued the standard whines and warnings: Syria, Hezbollah condemn U.N. tribunal.

BEIRUT, Lebanon - Syria and its allied Hezbollah group on Thursday condemned a U.N. decision to set up a tribunal in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, warning that it violated Lebanon’s sovereignty and would deepen its political crisis.

Unlike, say, murdering a former prime minister.

Little Green Footballs

After the earlier guest post from Duncan Hunter, several readers emailed about yesterday’s post at the ABC radio network site by alleged candidate Fred Thompson: Living in Terror.

There’s also a podcast at the link above.

Let me ask you a hypothetical question. What do you think America would do if Canadian soldiers were firing dozens of missiles every day into Buffalo, N.Y.? What do you think our response would be if Mexican troops for two years had launched daily rocket attacks on San Diego — and bragged about it?

I can tell you, our response would look nothing like Israel’s restrained and pinpoint reactions to daily missile attacks from Gaza. We would use whatever means necessary to win the war. There would likely be numerous casualties on our enemy’s side, but we would rightfully hold those who attacked us responsible.

More than 1,300 rockets have ...   more »

Power Line

A video made by an "amateur scientist" surfaced today from Scotland. It was filmed at Loch Ness, and purports to show the long-rumored "monster." I suppose I could be fooled as easily as the next guy, but the video seems fairly compelling. Here it is:

I'd always been dismissive of Loch Ness stories, but we were in Scotland a few years ago, staying just off the southern end of the lake. We met a local minister who swore that, one evening some years earlier, he had been driving along the shore of Loch Ness and had seen a long, eel-like creature swimming in the water. He was sober at the time, too. (The ambiguity is deliberate.) So, who knows?

View Article  Al Qaeda Today
Power Line

The Telegraph has an interesting article on the current status of al Qaeda:

For several years after the terrorist attacks on September 11, [bin Laden and al Qaeda's "core" group] were engaged in little else than avoiding capture and fleeing the American-led offensive in Afghanistan.

Today, by contrast, they are probably secure enough to give strategic direction to al-Qa'eda cells across the world.

The Telegraph's reporter, David Blair, says that the view of al Qaeda as a "franchise" operation is probably outdated, and that the organization's leaders are now trying to take a more direct role in events. Their most significant success appears to have been the incorporation of the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC), an Algerian terrorist group, into al Qaeda.

That success, such as it is, comes in the context of a lot of failures. Many of al Qaeda's top operatives have been killed ...   more »

View Article  Caving in on Global Warming Earns Bush No Praise from NBC: Too Little, Too Late
NewsBusters.org - Exposing Liberal Media Bias

Reporting how President Bush “called on 15 other nations to join the U.S. in taking new steps to reverse climate change” by reducing “greenhouse gas emissions,” the NBC Nightly News demonstrated how caving in to liberal demands will not generate positive press coverage as NBC focused on those who complained Bush's plan “doesn't go far enough.” From Chicago, anchor Brian Williams marveled Thursday night at how “President Bush today underwent something of a conversion. He called for new action on global warming, something he resisted doing for a long time.” Williams proceeded to devote an entire report to how “the reaction to the President's global warming speech today was cold in some quarters.” Anne Thompson, identified as NBC's “chief environmental correspondent,” relayed how “environmental leaders I talked to today certainly weren't impressed. One said it was worse than too little, too late, and several ...   more »

View Article  DNC Misrepresents OReilly Factor Segment to Discredit Sen. McCain
NewsBusters.org - Exposing Liberal Media Bias

Well, sports fans, the Democrats are afraid to debate on Fox News, but they sure aren’t above using segments from the network’s top show to discredit political opponents.

To set this up, Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) was Bill O’Reilly’s guest on “The Factor” Wednesday, and the two got into quite a discussion about the proposed immigration bill (video available here).

Thursday morning, Michael Link posted the video at the Democratic Party’s website with the headline “O’Reilly Defends “White, Christian, Male Power Structure;” McCain Smiles and Nods” (h/t Pajamas Media).

Unfortunately, that’s clearly not what occurred (partial transcript to follow), and someone at the DNC wisely changed the headline to:
