In the final hours, with more than 40,000 votes cast in the two categories, John Bolton has a lock on the Anti-Idiotarian Award for 2006 but the race for the Idiotarian Award is much closer. At this point Kofi Annan has a comfortable lead, but a sudden surge could still put “Mainstream Media” over the top.

Little Green Footballs

A request by Spain’s Islamic Board to allow Muslims to pray in Cordoba’s cathedral (a former mosque, before Cordoba was liberated from Muslim rule in the 13th century) has been denied by the Roman Catholic bishop. (Hat tip: LGF readers.)

The Roman Catholic bishop of Cordoba in southern Spain has rejected an appeal from Muslims for the right to pray in the city’s cathedral, a former mosque.

Juan Jose Asenjo rejected the request made by Spain’s Islamic Board in a letter to the Pope. It had asked that the cathedral become an ecumenical temple where believers from all faiths could worship.

The bishop said such a move would not contribute to the peaceful co-existence between people of different religions. On the contrary, he said in a statement late on Wednesday, the joint use of temples and places of worship would only generate confusion amongst the faithful. ...   more »

In his usual lucid manner, Michael Barone reviews the logic that brought us where we are in the Middle East, and finds it still persuasive, compared to the alternatives:

I can remember reading a couple of years ago an argument that the reason George W. Bush followed the recommendations of the so-called neoconservatives–in Afghanistan as well as Iraq–is that the neoconservatives had an analysis of and a plan of action for dealing with Islamofascist terrorists and their state sponsors and aiders and abettors; and that no one else did.

That, of course, is our often-expressed view. President Bush has offered a long-term plan to deal with the scourge of Islamic terror. No one has so far offered a plausible alternative, as Michael argues:

In contrast, on the left we heard after September 11 some anguished voices asking, "Why do they hate us?" But many on the left immediately ...   more »
View Article  A Look Back on 2006
Power Line

We began the first hour of our radio show yesterday by talking about the last noteworthy event of 2006--the execution of Saddam Hussein. We then moved on to a retrospective of the last 12 months, as reflected in a series of audio clips from our show. From the political--November's election--to some of our favorite commentary on current afairs--Mark Steyn--to some of the more bizarre outposts of 2006 culture--Pink and Neil Young--it's all there. The first hour ends with an inspiring rendition of the Paul Wellstone tribute, "Be the Change," as performed by J.B. Doubtless. It was that kind of year.

View Article  Romney and the bloggers
Power Line

The Boston Globe has a report on Mitt Romney's early efforts to cultivate a relationship with the conservative blogosphere. The Globe acknowledges that Romney has already had some success in this regard. Hugh Hewitt, who previously has said that Romney has established a lead over John McCain and Rudy Giuliani when it comes to "new media," comments on the Globe's article here.

The Globe quotes Michael Turk, who ran the Bush online campaign in 2004, to the effect that unlike Democrats, whose 2004 primary was colored by bloggers, Republicans in 2008 will have their first-ever contested presidential primary where the blogosphere is a major political force. Turk told that Globe that GOP candidates will be judged on how well they've mobilized bloggers, and how much money they have raised online. He also said that the blogosphere is likely to have greatest influence in the primaries, because blogs ...   more »

View Article  A New Years Message From Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev
NewsBusters.org - Exposing Liberal Media Bias

Ladies and Gentlemen,

On January 1, 1989, Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev wrote a shared New Years message to the citizens of their respective countries. On the eve of 2007, their words have just as much meaning as they did eighteen years ago:

President Reagan's Message

On behalf of the American people, I send you greetings on the coming of the New Year.

In your country and mine, the New Year is a time of hope and renewal. Never have these qualities of the spirit been more necessary than now, as Soviet Armenia begins to heal from its wounds. You have our deepest sympathy. You have our prayers. And you have a personal hope from my wife, Nancy, and me that in the effort to rebuild what was shattered you will find your solace.

Whenever a business entity comes to dominate its field, there will inevitably be complaints and genuine dissatisfaction. I've been far from impressed with Google's dedication to customer service.

It's early to know how much of the negativity surrounding the brand lately is fully warranted, but there may be signs that Google is becoming increasingly unpopular in thought, if not yet deed.
